There is an ideas booklet included to help your kids get started. The box also has a few pictures that will show you some of the items that kids could possibly build. But the fun actually comes when the kids start using their own creativity to build items from scratch. There are tons of possibilities when there are 112 pieces to play with. Thus, it is definitely a highly versatile set compared to some other engineering toys out there.
Apart from the concept, the pieces are also easy to attach and remove, making it fun for younger children. While the recommended age group for many Magformers playsets is 6 and above, many parents are already letting their kids play with these tiles from the age of 2. In fact, it is one of the very few toys that could attract children from all age groups. Even some adults find the Magformers fascinating. So, if you have kids with a large age gap between them, this is one toy that could possibly get them to sit and play together.
Why The 112 Challenger Set Is The Best
Firstly, we don’t recommned that Magformers themed sets. For example, if you get the Magformers Carnival set, the things you can do with it is pretty limited. Once you have built the ferris wheel and a few other carnival rides, it isn’t much fun anymore to detach them and rebuild. Sure, you can use your creativity and build something else, but you are also limited by the number of pieces included in the set. The Carnival is only a 46-piece set.
This also brings us to the second point. You need a sufficient number of pieces to make a wide range of configurations. And kids need variety to keep them interested. Also, if there are going to be 2 or 3 kids sharing this toy, even the Magformers 62 Piece Designer Set isn’t going to be enough. They will be fighting over the pieces.
Therefore, unless your kid is really into a particular theme like the Magformers XL Cruisers for example, we feel that a universal set like the 112 Challenger offers more building possibilities and challenges. It is also gender neutral, suitable for both girls and boys.
Magformers 112 Challenger Set vs Magformers Smart Set

So, the Smart Set has these additional pieces not found in the Challenger: rectangles, isosceles triangles, super triangles, super squares and accessories. The accessories include 4 sets of wheels and 12 squares with dice pips. So, you can get 2 dice cubes with these 12 squares.
The main thing to consider is the price. For the extra number of pieces, you will have to pay about $20 to $30 more depending on the discount that you can get when you buy. By the way, if you are wondering where to buy Magformers, there are plenty of choices on Amazon. Anyway, the point is we find the accessories not too attractive to pay the extra money for. It is only the rectangles, triangles and squares that hold our interest. But whether these alone (22 pieces altogether) are worth the extra $20 to $30 is really debatable.
The other thing to think about if you are willing to spend that much money is whether it is better to buy another smaller set to compliment the 112 Challenger rather than buying the 144 Piece Smart Set. For instance, you can buy the Magnets in Motion 32-Piece Gear Set for about $32 which gives you even more variety of play.
The bottomline is we feel that the best Magformers set is the 112 Challenger Set if you want to get a magnetic building toy. It is a better choice than the Magformers Smart Set because the number of pieces is just right to keep kids entertained and share when necessary for a lower price.
