Playing in a sandbox out in the yard is a fun way to spend the day for any kid. You don’t have to bring them all the way to the beach for them to build a sand castle when this can be done right in your backyard. Thus far, the best sandbox with lid for kids that we have come across is the Step 2 Crabbie Sandbox.
Why Step 2 Is The Best Sandbox For Kids?
There are a few appealing reasons to make us pick this one out from among others. Firstly, it is big compared to other models. You need a bigger size play area to accommodate a growing kid. If two or more kids can play at the same time, it is even better. The dimensions of the Crabbie Sandbox is 47″ (W) x 47.5″ (D) x 16″ (H). The height is including the domed lid. The play area measures about 40″ (W) x 40″ (D) which is just over 3 feet both ways. It fits 300 lbs of sand which is more than enough for play.
Secondly, the sandbox comes with a lid. There are no drain holes, so you do need to make sure you cover it up in case it rains. The lid also protects the sand from getting dirty and prevents bugs and other creatures from crawling inside. It is a nice fit to keep the insects out. However, do take note that the lid may get blown off during strong winds. Weighing it down with a rock or other suitable items would be best to protect the sand.
Thirdly, this Step 2 sandbox is very durable. It can withstand high temperature and rough play without getting bent or going out of shape. Just like their outdoor playhouse, the color too does not fade even after a few years sitting in the yard.
Lastly, the crab design is cute and appealing. After all, if you are buying a sandbox for a kid, the appearance should attract them to it. And if it can brighten up your backyard and make it more fun, then it is a bonus. For this sandbox, the lid is designed like a shell while the seat is its claws. Your kids can sit on both the claws to play to free up more sand space if friends come along.
Step 2 Crabbie Sandbox vs Little Tikes Turtle Sandbox
You might ask why not choose the Little Tikes Trutle Sandbox? In fact, the design is pretty similar. Instead of a crab, the Little Tikes sandbox uses the shape of a turtle. So, rather than the claws, the flippers become the seats. The lid is the turtle shell and the whole structure is in shades of green.
In fact, the price of the turtle sandbox is also cheaper. So, if price is your consideration, then the Little Tikes sandbox should be the one to get. It is also a bestseller. At the time of writing, the difference between these two units is around $20.
But we would rather go for size. That is why the Step 2 Crabbie Sandbox gets our pick. The turtle one can only fit 150 lbs of sand with a size of 38.75″ (L) x 43.25″ (W) x 12″ (H). So, although cheaper, it is a smaller unit.
Are There Other Options?
Little Tikes Big Digger Sandbox
Well, what are the other options if the above two sandboxes with lid do not meet your requirements? If money is an issue, then you will need to go one step down and consider the Little Tikes Big Digger Sandbox. It is much smaller and the kids do not get to sit inside the sand pit but just around it to play with the accessories provided such as a dump truck, exacavator and shovel. This is the main drawback of a smaller unit.
But it is still an interesting backyard toy with its molded ramp and roadways as the lid. So, during play, the lid becomes an extension that joins up with the sandbox.
The good thing about this a smaller sandbox is that the cost is also much lower. Remember that bags of sand need to be purchased separately to fill up the box. So, the bigger the sandbox, the more sand you need to buy and this adds to the initial cost. As an alternative, you might also like to consider a sand and water table which provides more variety of play.
Kidkraft Backyard Sandbox
The KidKraft Backyard Sandbox is a bit different as it is made of wood instead of plastic. Some people like it while others don’t. Personally, we don’t because if it isn’t good quality solid wood, the whole structure may not last unless you do regular maintenance.
But we highlighted this sandbox here because it is a very large one. Some parents have complained that even the Crabbie Sandbox isn’t large enough because once two kids sit inside the pit, there is no longer enough space for play. This may be true, especially for older kids.
So, the KidKraft Backyard Sandbox may be able to solve this problem as it measures 60″ (W) x 60″ (L). It would definitely be able to fit two kids inside with plenty more space available for friends.
There is a mesh cover with this unit but it is not waterproof. We don’t really recommend buying this because the quality of wood does not give us the confidence that it would last. But if you value size over durability, then it should fit your needs better than the plastic sandboxes.
In our opinion, the best sandbox with lid for kids is still the Step 2 Crabbie Sandbox. It is best to have one that is fairly large and yet, should be durable enough to last at least a few years of play. There is none that fits these requirements better than the Crabbie Sandbox.
The price is not the cheapest but if you are going to keep this around in your backyard for a long time for your kids to enjoy, then we would think it is worth the money paid. The Crabbie Sandbox has been around for quite a number of years and the fact that parents are still buying it for their kids is proof that it is the right choice for many.
