Play in the first year moves in short stages: tracking a face, reaching for a dangling object, mouthing everything within range, then rolling, sitting and starting to crawl. Buy for the stage the baby is in now. A “12 months+” set bought at three months often sits unused, while a newborn sensory toy can feel redundant by the first birthday.
Stage-by-stage play formats
Newborn to about three months: high-contrast cards, soft books with bold patterns, and play gyms with a few dangling shapes the baby can bat at while lying on their back. Keep sessions short and supervised. Avoid crowding the sleep space with toys.
About three to six months: easy-grasp rattles, crinkle fabrics, and teethers designed for mouthing. Prefer one-piece or securely moulded designs over anything with loose beads inside a hard shell that you cannot inspect.
About six to twelve months: stacking cups, simple shape sorters with oversized pieces, soft balls, and cause-and-effect toys with a large button or roller. Floor mirrors marketed for tummy time should be shatter-resistant and used only as the maker describes.
Named examples of well-known formats (not rankings)
- Sophie la girafe-style natural rubber teethers — check the care leaflet and replace if the surface cracks.
- Lamaze or similar clip-on soft activity toys for the pram — confirm the clip is intended for that use and remove before sleep.
- Oball-style flexible grasp balls — useful once reaching is reliable; wash as directed.
- Fisher-Price or similar linkable rings — count the links against the age marking and keep them out of cots overnight.
Brand names above are familiar UK high-street formats only. They are not paid placements or “best of” awards. Always read the exact product’s age label and warnings.
Baby-specific checks before you pay
- Match the printed age marking on the UK box, not a social-media gift list.
- Look for CE or UKCA conformity marking on toys sold for the Great Britain market, and keep packaging until you are happy with the item.
- Skip second-hand soft toys with unknown history if you cannot wash them to the maker’s standard.
- Button batteries in lights or sound modules need secure compartments; follow the manufacturer and seek urgent medical help if a battery may have been swallowed.
- Toys do not belong in a sleeping space. Follow current safe-sleep guidance from a qualified source such as the NHS or The Lullaby Trust — this page is not medical advice.
Gifting a baby toy in the UK
Ask the parents about colours already covering the play mat, whether they want plastic-light options, and whether a play gym base already exists. For Christmas timing, delivery cut-offs and returns, use the Christmas Gift Finder. For a non-seasonal shortlist, open the Toy Finder with the baby age band. Wider checkout tips sit in our UK toy guide; safety marking and recall checks are on the toy safety checklist.
Next stage: when the child is walking and copying routines, move to toddler toys (1–2 years).
